FAQs

Do I need a fishing license?
Yes, a valid MT fishing license is required and is your responsibility. If you arrive without a fishing license the time required to obtain one will cut into your allotted time on the water.
Where should I stay?

MTC is located in Bozeman, MT and is the best overall location for your stay. The town has several hotels to choose from which are available at many different price points depending on what you are looking for. Rental homes are also a very popular option and the area has several to choose from on Vrbo or Airbnb. Other towns that are options to stay in would be Ennis or Livingston depending on the time of year. Please contact us for more information if you are looking to book somewhere besides Bozeman.

What species of fish can I catch?
Most of the waters we fish have wild brown trout, rainbow trout, native cutthroat trout, cutbows and mountain whitefish. Depending on the location you fish some may be more or less present than the others.
Is it fly fishing only?
Here at MTC we practice, teach, and promote fly fishing. However, if you would prefer to use a spin rod that can be arranged.
Is tipping required?
Tipping is not required. However, not tipping your guide is highly frowned upon! Our guides have several daily expenses to be able to provide you with a high quality experience on the water. Like most industries, average tips usually come in around the 20% mark. If for some reason you honestly feel as if your guide did not deserve a tip please contact us so we can discuss the situation after your trip.
What should I bring?

Fishing with MTC is an all inclusive experience. There are only a few small things to make sure you bring along:

  • Valid MT fishing license
  • Proper clothing for the weather
  • Rain coat (Recommended every day of the season)
  • Sunglasses
  • Water shoes for the summer months (Keens, Chacos, Crocks, Tevas…)
  • Sunscreen
  • Rods and reels are provided however you are more than welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer.
Can I keep my fish?
All of the fishing with MTC is 100% catch and release. This is commonly practiced by nearly all of the local outfitters to protect our natural resources and keep the fish populations healthy.
How many guides does our party need?

Guide trips will not exceed a two anglers to one guide ratio. If you have a party larger then two we will be happy to arrange for as many guides as you may need.

State Issued Fishing Closures:

Closures issued by the state do get implemented here in SW Montana from time to time. These closures are also known as “hoot owl” restrictions. They are put in place by the state when water temps get dangerously high for the fishery. When restrictions like this are put in place start times do become earlier. In most situations the closures are implemented from 2pm to midnight. To get in a full day, start times will be around 6:00am and end at 2:00pm. With that being said there is almost always an option (river) to fish that will not be under restriction.

Reservation Policy:

Reservations can be made by phone or by email. At the time of booking a 50% deposit will be due. The remainder of the cost will be due 30 days prior to your booked trip.

Cancellation Policy:

MTC is not responsible for inclement weather, undesirable water conditions, airline issues, lodging issues or car rentals. We fish rain or shine and will only cancel trips due to unsafe conditions (lightening, extreme winds or extremely cold temps). Cancelations can be made for a full refund 40 or more days prior to your booking. Cancelations made between 30-39 days prior to your booking will forfeit the 50% deposit and cancelations made within 29 days of your booking will forfeit your full payment. All cancelations made by MTC as a result of unsafe conditions will be credited a full refund.
